Fate of the Quarry Will Be Decided on November 18
Vulcan has been planning to replace nearly 1000 acres of farmland and natural habitat in south/east Jackson County with a rock quarry operation. The proposed site abuts working ranches, stables, farms and residences. It would extend to important wetlands including parts of the North Oconee.
After two years they are finally bringing their project for approval. THIS IS NOT A DONE DEAL. Many communities have stopped quarries through the political process. The Northeast Regional Development Commission, while not allowed to issue a recommendation, had serious concerns on land use and environmental issues. The Jackson County Planning Department and the Planning Commission recommended denial. The Board of Commissioners will decide on November 18.
The Quarry would:
- Overuse and damage the county water supply
- Destroy pastures and forest leading to loss of habitat and severe erosion into the North Oconee river
- Quarry dust can travel miles and is especially harmful to children
- Increases noise pollution
- Adds hundreds of heavy trucks to area roads
- Decreases property values
