The BOC will decide whether to approve or deny Vulcan Materials Inc. a Special Use Permit for the South Jackson Quarry. If they approve Vulcan will still have to go through an administrative approval process but that will be a long and costly process for citizens to influence. This is a chance for the Jackson County political leaders to follow the will of the people. The proposed quarry would be built in part of North Athens in Jackson County on top of the largest ground water recharge area in the region. It would also be very close to the North Oconee River a few miles upstream from the ACC water treatment plant. The company responsible for the quarry has a long history of environmental violations, and pose a serious threat to the water and air quality in the area. The Northeast Georgia Regional Commission flagged problems with the proposal and the Jackson County planning department and Jackson County Planning Commission recommended DENY.
